Dated 16 Dec: 1741. Sent from Wolfenbüttel (Germany) to (). Written in Latin.

Praenobilissimo Dom[ino] D[octori] Carolo LINNAEO
S[alutem] et Off[icia] dicit
Brückmannus, Med[icinae] Doct[or]

Floram Tuam Lapponicam[1] nondum hic loci vidi, interim gratissimum mihi fuit, catalogum plantarum[2] istius regionis in Actis Scient[iarum] Sveciae Anni 1735. perlustrandi; peramarem quaedam ex istis vegetabilia, partim mihi plane ignota, partim curiositatis ergo in mea rerum naturalium collectione asservanda, oculis meis videre, et quidem Gale fruticis odorati Septentrionalium portionem, cum parva relatione, quaenam fruticis pars sit odorata? an folia, cortex vel lignum? 2) Ulvam marinam tubulosam, intestinorum figuram referentem. 3) Fucum, chordam referentem, teretem, praelongum 4) Fucum spiralem maritimum majorem et alias Fuci marini species. 5) Charam vulgarem foetidam. 6.) A garicorum species, quae exsiccatae asservari possunt. 7) Erinacei species. 8) Byssi species. 9) Spongiam ramosam fluviatilemet in specie 10) aliquot exemplaria Isidis nucleorum juglandis figura, de quibus peculiarem mihi concipio ideam.

Si Byssus Tua Germanica, aurea, Violae Martiae odore, forsan sit noster lichen violaceus lapidibus accretus, quem in Historia naturali lapidis violacei delineavi? istam Byssum jam possideo, sed notum facio, me nunquam vel alium Botanicum filamenta in ista observasse, quibus tamen praecipue a lichenibus distingueretur.

Porro quaeritur, an Byssus alba, seminibus rotundis, sit forsan fungus seminifer Menzelii? quorum seminum figuram elegantem jam chalcographo aere exprimendam tradidi.

Quamprimum per negotia Tua cumulata fieri poterit, responsorias a Te mihi expeto.

Vale reliquum, vive et fave
Tibi deditissimo.

upSUMMARY

Franciscus Ernst Brückmann has not yet seen the Flora Lapponica but he was much pleased to examine the catalogue of plants from that region, (i. e. “Florula Lapponica” in the Acta Scientiarum Sveciae). He would like to see some of these plants with his own eyes and add them to his collections partly out of curiosity, partly because they are quite unknown to him. Brückmann has also ten questions as to these plants (see the Latin text).

Could Linnaeus’s Byssus germanica be the same as Brückmann’s Lichen violaceus? He made a drawing of it in his Historia naturalis. He has never observed any filaments in it. Nor has any other botanist.

And the Byssus alba, could it not be the fungus seminifer Menzelii?

Brückmann always wants minerals, metals and figured fossils for his collection. Yesterday and the day before, this collection was examined by Olof Kalmeter, who will also bring this letter to Linnaeus. Especially welcome are Linnaeus’s books and specimens of Swedish minerals and fossils. In return Brückmann can procure plants, seeds and fossils from Germany. If dissertations from Uppsala on medicine, physics, metallurgy and botany, in particular the dissertations, De planta sceptrum Carolinum and De astaco are available Brückmann would be most grateful. He can offer dissertations from Helmstedt and other German Academies.
