Non unicum insignis Tuae, Vir Excellentissime, in me benevolentiae experimentum mihi dedisti, ut ea fretus confidentius ad TE scribam. Quam benevole enim de me meisque conatibus sentias tum ex communis nostri Amici Cel[leberrimi] Gronovii tum ex ipsis humanissimis Literis tuis d[ie] 8 aug[usti] 1742 ad me scriptis, tum ex ore & epistola de re herbaria meritissimi D[omini] Gmelini intellexi. Hoc tuo favore nihil mihi prius nihil majus est, sed male tuis in me meritis TIBI respondere videbor, quod nullum meae gratitudinis signum & ne quidem Literas meas acceperis. Velim vero TIBI persuadeas id non mea culpa accidisse, nec enim dubium est Literas in itinere periisse; idem fere fatum tuae essent expertae, quas ad me dederas, quod Basileae inscriptae fuerint, ego Tiguri habitem. Nunc ea opportunitate utor mittendi epistolam, quam Doctiss[imus] Gmelinus humanissime obtulit, ut ex ea intelligas, quanti tuum favorem faciam & praeclara tua in rem Medicam & Historiam naturalem merita suspiciam simulque ut cognoscas qui nostri conatus & labores quos consiliis Tuis sapientissimis ut regere velis majorem in modum a TE peto. Ab ineunte adolescentia incredibilem fere in studium Botanicum amorem eumque velut ingenitum parentes mei in me animadvertentes disciplinae Cel[eberrimi] Jac[obi] Scheuchzeri me tradiderunt, a cujus ore et monitis pendens plurium annorum spatio aliquam, sed, ut vere dicam, empiricam plantarum notitiam acquisivi. Postquam nondum 17 annos natus ter Helveticas remotissimas Alpes conscendissem plantarum gratia. A[nn]o 1726 Basileam & Lugdunum Batavorum proficiscens Immortali Boerhaavio innotui, cujus paternum in me affectum grata memoria recolere, dum vivam, non desinam. Patebat ibidem mihi, quae ejus benevolentia fuit; omni tempore aditus ad instructissimum hortum accademicum ejusque non modo institutione & praeceptis sed & consiliis saluberrimis frui contigit. Plurimum quoque mihi profuit singularis favor & amicitia Celeb[errimi] Gronovii, ex cujus liberalitate deinceps ad plurimarum rarissimarum plantarum, quas ex horto & Thesauris suis mihi suppeditavit, perveni. Parisiis ex benevolentia Celeb[berrimorum] Jussiorum & Isnardi quam plurima mihi parata fuerant, sed postquam hiemem in Anatomicis & Chirurgicis laboribus transigeram ex acuta febri ultra 4 menses decumbens & vix reconvalescens paternus amor me revocavit in Helvetiam. Sed veteris morbi vestigia nimium sentientem & a vicissitudine tempestatum plurimum laesum Parentes et amici permoverunt, ut Itineribus Alpinis valedicerem. Impedierunt dein munera publica, cum unanimi suffragio Magnif[icorum] Gymnasii Praesidum Cel[eberrimo] Jo[hanni] Scheuchzero die 8 Martii 1738 ex stomachica febri obeunti in munere docendi Physicam & Canonici dignitate succederem. Eo tempore egregia tua Scripta in Helvetiam pervenerunt. Vidi, quam pulchre Botanicam & Historiam naturalem reformarent, quantus nitor, quae accuratio & perfectio studio accederet, si ex tuis praeceptis traderetur. Optavi, ut ea ratione, quam in fundamentis Botanicis praecepisti, Plantarum historia elaboraretur. Tentavi rem in stirpibus mihi notis et ex vivis descriptis, deinde in exsiccatis, quarum ultra 6 000 in Herbario servaveram, dein in iis, quas accuratiores Botanici recentiores descripserunt, ita qualemcumque copiam nanctus sum, quae ad confirmandum et augendum opus incitarent. Pergo C[aspari] Bauhini pinacem & J[ohannis] Bauhini historiam meis collectaneis inserere, dein opus Rajanum, plantas a Tournefortio recensitas. Quaererem itaque, utrum liceret Salvias cum Didynamiis gymnotetraspermis jungere, cum & stamina ipsa sint bifurcata, utrum glumosos flores in triandriis conjungere, licet anthoxantho duo tantum sint stamina, Oryzae & Junci bis tria, Zeae, Canici, Holco, Cenchro flores sexu distincti. Nomina quidem horum generum in singulis tuis Classibus loca sua servarent, sed per exceptionis legem ad alias classes revocarentur, quod per apta signa in nullis speciebus in Naturae Systemate a TE factum video. Hoc modo ordo generum tuorum vix mutaretur; simul autem ad Classes naturales ibi definitas plurimas, non paucae novae accederent. Icones quod attinet, tales operi destinavi quales quidem claram attendenti ideam suppeditare & a dubiis liberare possent, nec tamen pretium operis nimium augerent, ut quibus in libros non magnos sumtus facere, licet opus parabile foret. Quod Fructificationis differentias spectat consilium mihi est eas secundum partes a TE in characteribus generum recensitas ex una vel aliquot speciebus exhibere & in singulis tabulis quae singulis classibus vel ordinibus respondent repraesentare, ut fideles oculi sic cognoscant, quae similitudo specierum generum, quae differentiae. and also from a letter from Linnaeus himself dated 8 August 1742 [Linnaeus to Gessner, 8 August, 1742Letter L0466] that Linnaeus is pleased with Gessnerís works. Gessner had written to Linnaeus but his letter seems to have gone astray. The same happened to Linnaeusís letters to Gessner, because they were sent to Basle, but Gessner lives in Zürich. Gessner now takes the opportunity to send a letter through Gmelin to assure Linnaeus how grateful he is to him and how much he admires him. When Gessner was a young man, he burned for botany. His parents therefore sent him to Johann Jakob Scheuchzer Scheuchzer, Johann Jacob

In 1728 Haller asked Gessner to accompany him on his journey through the region of Basle, the Jura mountains, Geneva, etc. Having returned to Zürich in 1730, Gessner taught mathematics, physics, medicine, anatomy and botany. Together with Haller he collected plants for a synopsis of the Swiss plants. In 1732-1734 Gessner spent the summers in the Alps. In 1734 he succeeded Johann Jacob Scheuchzer in teaching mathematics. absence for political activities, Gessner taught physics. In 1735 Gessner suffered from an obstruction of the liver. He therefore went to the baths of Leuk, where he also gathered plants from the surrounding mountains. On his way home he started to plan together with Haller on their synopsis of plants, which his students now have as compendiums. In March 1738 Johann Scheuchzer died of fever in the stomach. Gessner succeeded him. At that time Linnaeusís excellent works arrived in Switzerland. Gessner saw how beautifully they reformed natural history. He wished to systematise plants in the way Linnaeus had advocated in Fundamenta botanicaLinnaeus, Carl Fundamenta

These genera may retain their place in Linnaeusís individual classes but could be referred by the law of exception to other classes as has been done with the help of signs in Systema naturae.
