Dated 1749 d. 29 april.. Sent from Uppsala (Sweden) to (). Written in Swedish.

Mine Herrar.

C[arl] Linnaeus.

upSUMMARY

Christopher TärnströmísTärnström, Christopher
(1711-1746). Swedish. Clergyman and
botanist. At the recommendation of
Linnaeus, he was accepted as chaplain by
the Swedish East India Company. In 1746
he departed for China but died on the
island of Pulo Candor, Vietnam.
Correspondent of Linnaeus.
widow [Brita TärnströmTärnström, Brita

marriage, born Stenhof.
] has handed over her husbandís diary to Linnaeus, from which he will make excerpts when he returns [the same day, Linnaeus started on the journey to Scania; Tärnströmís diary was published in 2005, Christopher Tärnströms journalTärnström, Christopher

].

Tärnströmís daily and accurate reports on the temperature are, however, worth excerpting and publishing in the Acta [Linnaeus refers to the transactions of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences [Kungliga Svenska VetenskapsakademienKungliga Svenska Vetenskapsakademien,

Academy of Sciences, Stockholm. Founded

; the reports on temperature were, however, never published there, but are included in his diary].

The widowís situation is desperate. She entreats Linnaeus to be ĒconservedĒ, i.e. to have a husband from the clergy. Linnaeus, being married, is not available and there is no clergyman in the Academy of Sciences. Linnaeus, who sent Tärnström on his last mission, feels guilty and responsible for the distress but sees no solution.

Today Linnaeus has no time to write more.
