Dated XIII Martii 1750. Sent from Venezia (Italia) to (). Written in Latin.

Nobilissimo, Experimentissimo Doctissimoque Domino
Carlo Linnaeo,
Archiatro P[erillustri] Reg[is] Sv[eciae], Med[icinae] et Bot[anices] Prof[essori] Ups[aliensi],
Viro Celeberrimo,
S[alutem] P[lurimam] D[icit]
Josephus a Rathgeb Eques.

Epistolam, quam Tu proxime mittendam jam in illa d[e] d[ie] 24 Jan[uarii][1] significasti, nondum accepi. Vehementer eam desidero. Interea Tibi mitto hic adjuncta semina plantae, quae in Horto Patavino, uti aliae plurimae, male nominatur Dodartia. Eadem semina jam anno praecedente, nisi me memoria fallit, me Tibi misisse existimo, ut plantam natam examines [sic] diceresque sententiam tuam, num recte a me judicatum hanc esse speciem Digitalis et quidem planta congener iis Digitalibus, quarum GronoviusGronovius, Johan Frederik
(1690-1762). Dutch. Naturalist, senator
of Leiden. Linnaeusís benefactor and
friend. Published Flora Virginica
(1743, 1762) together with John Clayton.
Correspondent of Linnaeus.
in Fl[orae] Virg[inicae] p. 72 meminit.[2] Habet enim haec planta Patavina quintum stamen hinc barbatum, sed castratum, sub labio superiore insertum, quo haec planta ab omnibus didynamiae plantis se distinguit. Quum haec aestate praeterita absens fuit, eandem denuo examinare non licuit. Spero id facturum haec aestate proxima, nisi nova causa me denuo aliorsum avocet.

Vale et me amare perge!

Venetiis die XIII Martii 1750.

[a][a] : [added by Rathgeb] Nomini Tuo addictissimus
Tibique aeternum devinctus
Rathgeb

upSUMMARY

In his letter dated 24 January 1750 o.s., 4 February 1750 n.s., Linnaeus promised to write again. However, Joseph von Rathgeb has not yet received any letter.

Rathgeb sends Linnaeus seeds of a plant, which he suspects is wrongly called Dodartia in the Garden of Padua. He suggests that it is a species of Digitalis and thus congeneric to the Digitales in Johann Friedrich Gronoviusís Flora Virginica, p. 72.
