Dated 1765 d. 4 Martii. Sent from Uppsala (Sweden) to Regensburg (Germany). Written in Latin.

Viro Amplissimo,
D[omino] D[octori] Jac[obo] Chr[istiano] SCHAEFFERO,
Professori Hafniensi,
Reg[iae] Sue[ciae] Scent[iarum] Socio,
S[alutem] pl[urimam] d[icit]
Car[olus] a Linné.

His vale et fave!

Responsorias si dederis, inscriptio erit Societati Regiae Scientiarum Upsaliae.

Dabam Upsaliae 1761 d[ie] 4 Martii.

upSUMMARY

Linnaeus has delayed writing to Jacob Christian SchaefferSchaeffer, Jacob Christian
(1718-1790). German. Lutheran pastor
and superintendent, Regensburg.
Correspondent of Linnaeus.
, since Linnaeus has been very ill. Linnaeus is now happy to be able to inform Schaeffer that he has been elected a member of the Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala[Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i UppsalaKungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i
Uppsala,
Swedish. The Royal
Society of Sciences at Uppsala was
founded in 1728.
].

Linnaeus asks Schaeffer to send an observation to the Society, so that it can be published in the Society’s Transactions [Linnaeus means the transactions of the Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala, Acta societatis regiae scientiarum Upsaliensis Acta societatis regiae
scientiarum Upsaliensis
(Stockholm
1740-1751).
; there was an intermission in the publishing of these transactions, from 1751 to 1772]. Linnaeus would like Schaeffer to describe how he stuffs up birds and fish with chalk.

There will be a new edition of Linnaeus’s Systema [Linnaeus refers to Systema naturae, 12th editionLinnaeus, Carl Systema
naturae
, 12th edition (Stockholm
1766-1768). Soulsby no. 62.
] where Schaeffer can find his insects.

P.S. Linnaeus has heard that Schaeffer has published illustrations of his insects [Linnaeus refers presumably to the forthcoming work by Schaeffer, Icones insectorumSchaeffer, Jacob Christian
Icones Insectorum circa Ratisbonam
indigenorum, coloribus naturam
referentibus expressae
, 3 vols.
(Regensburg, 1766-1779)
, but in Schaeffer’s D.J.C. Schäffer's Abhandlungen von InsectenSchaeffer, Jacob Christian
D.J.C. Schäffer's Abhandlungen
von Insecten
, 3 vol. (Regensburg,
1764-1779).
there were also plenty of illustrations]. He would like Schaeffer to send him these so that they can be inserted in the new edition of the Systema naturae.
