Dated 3 Octob 1765. Sent from Stora Ek (Sweden) to Uppsala (Sweden). Written in Swedish.

tienstskyldige tienare
Carl Fr[edrik] Scheffer.

upSUMMARY

Now that Carl Fredrik SchefferScheffer, Carl Fredrik
(1715-1786). Swedish. Count, diplomat,
politician and councillor. Tutor to the
Swedish crown prince Gustav. Influenced
by the physiocrats in France. Brother of
Ulrik Scheffer. Correspondent of
Linnaeus.
has left his official position, which he felt was both difficult and dangerous, he is glad to be able to do what he wants, and since he has always been interested in science, he has turned to that, although he feels that his love for it is greater than his knowledge of it. However, he has learned that natural history is for mankind the most useful branch of science and that Linnaeus is its greatest expert. So Scheffer is convinced that Linnaeus will be able to give him the information he needs to promote his interest and his knowledge. He has seen in foreign learned journals that a new red pigment has been produced in France. It is made from the roots of Cruciata Lusitanica latifolia glabra, flore albo. This pigment is said to be as good as that which is produced from the plant "La garence", the Swedish name of which is unknown to Scheffer. He has taken the liberty of communicating this new invention to Linnaeus and of asking Linnaeus to tell him if this plant grows anywhere in Sweden in a large quantity and where it can most typically be found. Scheffer also asks for a description of this plant, arranged after Linnaeusís system. He writes the letter from his estate in Västergötland, but as he is about to leave for Stockholm in the next few days, Linnaeus should send his answer to Stockholm. Scheffer hopes to visit Linnaeus in Uppsala during the winter, when he goes there to see old friends. Then, he will tell Linnaeus in what high esteem he holds him.
