Domenico VandelliVandelli, Domenico (1735-1816).
Italian. Physician and botanist. Left
for Portugal in 1764, where he was a
professor at the university of Coimbra.
He was the founder of Ajuda botanical
garden in Lisboa and of the Coimbra
botanical garden, where he was also the
first director (1773-1791).
Correspondent of Linnaeus. has heard from Jean BedoireBedoire, Jean (1728-1800).
Swedish. Swedish agent in Lisbon
1757-1778, thereafter Master of
ceremonies and governor in Sweden.
Ennobled De Bedoire. that the material that Vandelli had asked Linnaeus to send, can not arrive before spring. However, Vandelli has arranged with Bedoire for the payment, at least eight Portugese gold coins. The transaction will be through a contact of Bedoire’s in Stockholm.
Vandelli has observed a scolopender with twenty-one pairs of legs. He describes it briefly.
Vandelli concludes with a question, if Clas AlströmerAlströmer, Clas
(1736-1794). Swedish. Baron,
industrialist. Sent plants and specimens
to Linnaeus from his travels abroad.
Bought Linnaeus’s “little herbarium”,
now in the Natural History Museum in
Stockholm. Son of Jonas Alströmer,
brother of August, Johan and Patrick
Alströmer. Correspondent of
Linnaeus is still in England.
