Link: • Carl Linnaeus to Hans Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs, 27 December 1768 n.s.
Dated 1768 d. 27 Decembr.. Sent from Uppsala (Sweden) to Ornäs (Sweden). Written in Swedish.

Linnaeus thanks Hans Gustaf Hjort af OrnäsHiort af Ornäs, Hans Gustaf
(1725-1791). Swedish. Nobleman. Civil
servant. Correspondent of Linnaeus.
for his letter of 22 November 1768 [this letter has not come down to us] and the enclosed birch leaf that was so remarkably shaped. Linnaeus admits that he had never encountered anything like it previously.

Linnaeus enquires whether the tree continuously produces similar leaves, and if so perhaps it could be donated to the Uppsala University Botanical Garden and to the nation’s youth, thereby becoming a specific memorial to Hjort af Ornäs, and where it could be seen by all the royalty and foreign dignitaries that visit the garden. Depending, of course, on whether the tree could be transported.

As birch trees are difficult to transplant, writes Linnaeus, it would be best if the tree were lifted during the winter when the soil would be frozen in a lump around the roots and then transported with a farmer who visits Bergslagen.
