John Burgess Burgess, John (?-1805).
Scottish. Botanist and clergyman.
Correspondent of Linnaeus.
has been studying botany since he was appointed as a priest in a Scottish parish ten years earlier and wanted something less scholarly to devote part of his time to. He had learnt botany from Linnaeusís works, and it had pleased him very much.

Now, Burgess has found eight species of lichens, which he has not found mentioned in the second edition of Species plantarumLinnaeus, Carl Species
plantarum
(Stockholm 1762-1763).

. He sends specimens of them and makes short comments on the locations where he had found them.
