received Linnaeus’s letter of 1 January 1772 [the letter from Linnaeus might have been an undated letter, presumably written in December 1771Letter L4576], and expresses his thanks. Höpken admits to being sensitive to news that old friends have been lost, and on this occasion it was Claes EkebladEkeblad, Claes (1708-1771).

Höpken wishes that the New Year could come several times every year which would then mean more frequent letters from Linnaeus which, to Höpken, are delightful and edifying.
