Dated 29 Jun. 1772. Sent from Tyresö (Sweden) to Uppsala (Sweden). Written in Swedish.

Töresö d[en] 29. Jun[i] 1772.

Wälborne H[err] Archiater och Riddare, samt
nuwarande Rector Magnifice

Tienstskyldigste tienare

upSUMMARY

Carl Fredrik SchefferScheffer, Carl Fredrik
(1715-1786). Swedish. Count, diplomat,
politician and councillor. Tutor to the
Swedish crown prince Gustav. Influenced
by the physiocrats in France. Brother of
Ulrik Scheffer. Correspondent of
Linnaeus.
tells Linnaeus that he finds pleasure in reading scholarly texts and exchanging letters with learned men. One of these, Baudeau [Nicolas BaudauBaudeau, Nicolas (1730-1792).
French. Theologian and economist.
Founded the first economic review in
France 1765,
Éphémérides du
citoyen
. Opposed the physiocratic
theory before he himself became an
active adherent of the physiocratic
movement.
], author of the Journal de l’agriculture Journal de
l´agriculture, du commerce et des
finances
(1765-1774).
[Scheffer presumably means that Baudeau contributed to the Journal, which was dominated by physiocrats], knows and honours Linnaeus as the best expert of the age in nature. Baudeau has asked Scheffer to ask Linnaeus where in Europe you could find the plant Arbuscula sinensis, from which the nice scarlet colour is produced by the peoples in the East. It is also of interest to know how this plant could be cultivated, when it should be planted in what kind of soil and everything else around its requirements. It is very important for the textile industry, since it would make the use of cochineal unnecessary, a pigment that has become very expensive. Scheffer would be very grateful if Linnaeus could give him an answer about this plant. It would be of great use to the public, which Scheffer knows that Linnaeus considers important. Scheffer likes being able to show Linnaeus how much he respects him.
