upSUMMARY

Linnaeus is grateful to José Celestino MútisMútis, José Celestino
(1732-1808). Spanish. Botanist.
Went to South America in 1760 and lived
in Bogotá, which due to him
became an important centre of learning.
His comprehensive herbarium, manuscripts
and numerous watercolour botanical
illustrations were sent to Spain after
his death. Correspondent of Linnaeus.
both for a package and a letter dated 6 June 1773Letter L4861. Linnaeus is extremely pleased with the plants and birds that have been sent.

Johan Gottschalk WalleriusWallerius, Johan Gottschalk
(1709-1785). Swedish. Professor of
chemistry at Uppsala.
has resigned his professorship.

Linnaeus entreats Mútis to send him a flower of Balsamus peruvianus so that he can determine its genus.

Mútis should not name plants after his friends if they have not deserved it.

Linnaeus discusses the plants and birds that Mútis has sent him, for example, Mutisia.
