, 12th edition (Stockholm

[there was no improved edition of the 12th edition].

After the conventional phrases of flattery, etc., etc., Gyllenhaal gets to the point, stating that he has been interested in natural history since childhood, particularly entomology, conducting studies during three years in Västergötland and neighbouring provinces. During this time he had collected about 1300 species of insects but, lacking auctors and sufficient knowledge, he was unable to distinguish those known from those unknown. Gyllenhaal intends first to communicate with Modéer because he has the necessary library and a more mature knowledge. However, during his studies Gyllenhaal had kept journals of the time, place and circumstances under which he found these insects, where unidentified ones were marked with a certain number. Gyllenhaal has prepared a copy of some of these lists and encloses them together with the letter in the hope that Linnaeus will find them of use when preparing the next edition of the Fauna Svecica [the second edition was published in 1761, Fauna Svecica, 2nd editionLinnaeus, Carl Fauna Svecica
