upSUMMARY

In Ronneby, near Karlskrona, a tree can be found which, according to local statements, in the autumn carries seed-vessels containing nothing but small flies.

has collected such seed-vessels and sent them to Linnaeus.

Linnaeus notes that the tree is Populis nigra and that the flies are called Asphides. They have been described by René-Antoine Ferchault de ReaumurRéaumur, René-Antoine

Physicist and naturalist. His works
cover geometry, technology, mineralogy,
ornithology. His collections of natural
history objects, mineralogy etc. were
given to the Académie des
sciences after his death. Correspondent
